EB White was ahead of his time when he wrote the above reflection. Nature’s forces are stronger than humankind can “hack” our way out of, but that’s all the more reason that we must fight with everything we have to protect Her, thereby protecting ourselves and future generations in the process.
Looking ahead to 2022, my vision is clearer than ever: the way of the future for design, for us, for our planet, is circularity.
Nature, herself, is circular. The Earth is round, planets orbit the sun in an ellipse, and moons orbit their planets the same way. A flower grows, drops her seeds, dies, and is reincarnated by those seeds to live on in the same cycle. Rain falls to the ground, where it is evaporated into the air until it falls again.
So, of course, the answer to our modern problem of excess waste and the pollution of our environment and atmosphere lies in nature’s circularity as well! The more we can extend the lifecycles of the spaces we envision, the products we make, the items we use daily, the more we echo nature’s perfect cycles of birth, life, death, and rebirth. Of beginning, middle, and an end that feeds the next beginning.
This year, I have some of my own full-circle moments to look forward to!
I’m excited to have launched a weekly series on my IG feed—the LC Glossary! Each week on Thursday, I’m defining a key word or phrase pertaining to sustainability and circularity to help people gain a richer understanding of the movement, and hopefully, inspire some change!
Soon, we’ll be debuting a new LC Inc website, designed beautifully by the team at The Beaux Arts, who previously designed our branding! I cannot wait to share it with you, as it encompasses the LC vision and ethos more fully than ever before. Watch this space, it’s coming soon!
And, please mark your calendars for May 3rd at 12pm EST for my expert panel, The Next Frontier: Circularity in Design, curated in partnership with EarthX for Circular City Week NY 2022! I’m delighted to return to Circular City Week as a platform partner again this year, and host an event with such stellar (and circular) minds including Tone Søndergaard, Director of Circular City Week and Danish CleanTech Hub; Susan Inglis, Executive Director of The Sustainable Furnishings Council; and Trammell Crow, Chairman and Founder of EarthX and EarthXTV.
And…there is so much more to come… but we’ll save some news for our next post!
It is bound to be an exciting year, full of growth, connection, and hopefully… more circularity!
Today, as you move through your day, I invite you to notice all the circularity in the world around you, and in your own life, and consider… how can I apply these principles to help enrich the environment, rather than take from it?
