As a pioneer in the field of holistic design, I frequently find myself surrounded by curious minds. Followers, readers, potential clients, and even friends and family often approach me wanting to better understand what I do and how.
As we usher in a new year, and, undoubtedly a new season of fantastic questions, I wanted to make sure I address some important questions on behalf of the industry as a whole. Here is a roundup of Laurence Carr Design’s FAQs for 2018.
Does holistic interior design really work?
New to the design scene, holistic interior design is one of the most effective tools an individual can put into practice when striving toward wellness and overall life betterment. Harnessing ancient wisdom, including that of I Ching, Feng Shui and Vatsu, and blending that with modern interior architecture and design concepts, holistic interiors place healing right where it should be—at the very center of one’s life. When wellness goals are woven into the very fabric of the home, living and feeling better become one in the same, and they come far more easily than ever before. I find that clients are often pleasantly surprised at how quickly they begin to feel better and, overall, live happier, often citing water elements and biophilia as the pieces that made the most immediate difference, with furniture layout and harnessing the soul and science of colors to follow.
How can intentional interior design help individuals heal from grief or effects of a divorce?
Dealing with loss is one of the most difficult challenges we face as humans. It has the ability to shake everything we know about life itself, often causing stress and anxiety to amplify sadness. Feng Shui teaches us how important the flow of energy is, and how that can be tweaked or changed with the tiniest of shifts. Re-mapping a room, or even an entire home can vastly shift the energy flow lending itself to positivity and healing by opening energetic pathways. Additionally, leaning toward minimalism is a proven way to declutter the mind. It’s not about removing memories or burying the past, it’s about consciously curating items in your home to evoke positive, life-giving feelings as opposed to feelings that deplete.
How can your space increase effects of yoga or meditation?
Different spaces have different energies, which I am certain is abundantly clear to anyone who is empathic. And this is true of each and every corner of our homes. I advise clients to spend some time alone in the space, spending a quiet moment in each room. Naturally, the body will relax in certain spaces, which is how you narrow your search for the perfect sanctuary. This relaxation is an indication of your body reacting to an open energetic pathway. These spaces are extremely special and act as a conduit for positive energy flowing into your heart space. A bonus? The powerful energy in these spaces can be lifted with the use of rose quartz, clear quartz, or citrine.
How closely is art, architecture and design tied?
With past work experiences steeped in dance, fashion, music, performing arts and more, it is impossible for me to separate art, architecture, and design. To me, it is about creative flow. Whether it’s flowing body movements on stage, the drape and flow of fabric, the flow of melodic tones or the flowing lines of a sleek building, they are one in the same. Each medium embraces an energy that is similar, yet vastly different. My unique contribution to the industry is thanks in part to my ability to appreciate flow and to exist in the space between form and function. My approach to design harnesses the two in a way that celebrates artistic sensibilities while maintaining a grasp on practicality and a passion for healing.
Have you ever been part of a project where you had to work hard to align with the client’s energy?
It would be impossible for anyone to align energetically with everyone. There have been times where I felt an immediate energetic disconnect from a client, and nearly every time, this was a symptom of the very issue the client came to the table wanting to tackle. Often, this means that I simply need to open my heart space and ground myself, but I have to be careful to set boundaries. Without firm energetic boundaries in place, I would not be able to help clients as effectively as their pain would become mine. So, in these instances, I use my empathic energy and my instincts to make small changes in my approach until alignment happens. When alignment is ultimately achieved it feels like an incredible syncing of mind and spirit. Only then will I move forward in helping these clients toward ultimate wellness and healing through design.
What is the home innovation you’re waiting for?
In 2019, Tesla is set to do incredible things for sustainable energy and I personally cannot wait to begin installing their solar tiles in my residential and commercial projects. Having purchased a Tesla vehicle, I am a committed Tesla cheerleader and am grateful for the pioneering work they are doing in the industry, creating streamlined products that change our relationship to the energy we use to power our lives.
And with that, I wish you the happiest new year. May your 2019 be filled with laughter, love, and light. I am excited to continue to learn and grow with you, dear reader. Much to come!
