The Hygge of Handmade

The Hygge of Handmade

In the northern hemisphere, temperatures are rapidly cooling down, and hours of daylight are reaching the lowest point all year. In the US, we’re seeing another surge of the pandemic, with many regions moving back into a stay-at-home mindset after a brief reprieve this fall.

In what could feel like a time of isolation and frustration, I propose using this opportunity to nestle into our homes with an appreciative mindset, and feather our nests to inspire feelings of comfort and joy. Rather than feeling like a stay-at-home moment, let’s shift our perspective into a safe-at-home vibe.

The Danish concept of Hygge encapsulates this notion perfectly. It is defined as “a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.” Doesn’t that sound lovely? Even for those in the warmer south this season, you can make small updates to bring Hygge into your home at any time of year.

Beyond the more obvious ways to Hygge-fy your space like crackling fireplaces, warm beverages, deliciously scented candles, and twinkle lights, I find that incorporating as many handmade elements as possible is a sure-fire way to add comfort and meaning to your space.

In shopping handmade materials, you’re supporting a micro-economy, giving independent craftspeople and artisans a much-appreciated economic boost, and validating their art.

The care and attention-to-detail that goes into their craft are translated into your objects, casting them with an energy of loving-kindness that then goes on to infuse your space (and your heart) once you come into its possession.

Chunky hand-knit throw blankets, hand-thrown ceramic housewares, hand-poured candles, small-batch crafted liqueurs, hand-made bath salts, plants from local family-owned nurseries, even independent music… these are all lovely ways to add a sense of warmth and coziness to your days and nights this winter, while enriching the lives of the people who made them.

This season, let’s pass over the convenience of overnight delivery and big box stores, and shop small to source items that will bring Hygge happiness and cozy quality to your home. That way, you can enter the New Year with a renewed love of your space, and the good vibes of having supported small sellers.

Wishing you a happy, healthy, harmonious new year. A bientot!
