Part of creating happy, aligned homes and commercial spaces for my clients involves making decisions that are eco-friendly. This is especially pertinent as we watch the steady decline of our planet’s natural resources, always made especially poignant when Earth Day passes. This is why it is so important to me to not only add natural elements, like plants, into design schemes but to shop responsibly, using sustainable materials and buying from companies with beautiful, eco-friendly fixtures and furnishings.
Europeans are starting to weave this thinking into the very fabric of design. One of my favorite examples of this is Milan I Salone Mobile, a revolutionary exhibition and contest that celebrates sustainability. Among the deserving winners in 2018 are budding designer Sakari Hartikainen from Finland, who received accolades for his product, Savoa, a delicately balancing side table that resonates to the ecological balance and mirrors the constant quest for harmony in our lives.
For textiles, sofas and chairs we love Stem whose commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly furniture is an integral part of their business model. Their responsible manufacturing process takes place in the USA, cutting down on carbon emissions, and they don’t use fire retardants or harsh chemicals. We particularly love the simplicity and structure of the Miku Chair and the Effortless, yet undeniably chic Palder Bed, which takes cues from Japanese design.
Haiku Designs is another sure favorite, whose company values sate, “We believe that enjoying a comfortable, lifestyle that is healthy not only for oneself but for the planet is entirely possible. We love the clean lines of the Tentai Writing Desk for our Feng Shui offices, featuring a mid-century modern architectural design showcasing clean lines and stylishly tapered legs.
