I have always slept well, allowing my ever-present, vivid dreams to inspire my designs. However, once I discovered all-natural bedding and mattress company, Coco-Mat, I quickly realized that sleep could be an even more restorative experience, further connecting me to the earth.
Started in Greece in 1989, Coco-Mat was founded on the principle that natural materials could be expertly spun, sewn together and constructed to facilitate blissful sleep.
As a proponent of sustainable furniture design, I can say that Coco-Mat’s construction process itself is both traditional and unprecedented. Apart from standard designs, Coco-Mat has the capability to make just about anything, including custom-sized mattresses and pillows. All production takes place in their privately owned factory in Xanthi, Northern Greece, whose carbon footprint is virtually zero.
The factory itself operates like a workshop, following hyper-traditional methods.
Master carpenters work with natural, replenishable materials including wood, wool, seaweed, and other matter found locally. Makers take painstaking measures to respect and help to preserve our precious global ecosystem.
Mattress offerings include natural latex options in varying levels of elasticity based on your preference for firmness.
Soft latex is expertly layered interspersed with harder layers of coconut fiber to support the unique distribution of your body weight. The result is a perfectly constructed mattress with just the right give, softly hugging your curves and contours. I was able to experience this firsthand recently when I spent an afternoon trying different mattresses with the guidance of mattress expert, John, at DDB showroom in New York City.
To pair with mattresses, unique, customizable pillows are filled with fluffy, shredded latex.
In 13 different shapes, the pillows also offer aromatherapy, scented lightly with lavender or eucalyptus. There is truly a pillow for every kind of sleeper in Coco’s collection. Additionally, duvets come in all sizes and are filled with the finest goose and duck down. An added layer prevents feathers from poking through the fabric, promising optimal coziness. To round out your bed, beautiful throws in one-of-a-kind patterns and textures can be draped at the bottom, or over feet as you sip a cup of hot tea.
Coco-Mat isn’t just a company that cares about the planet.
It’s a company that gives back to the global community. Taking altruism to the next level, Coco-Mat has started the Pillow Positive Project, an initiative that directly supports breast cancer patients who have gone through a lumpectomy or a single or double mastectomy. The 100% washable heart-shaped pillow is made with all natural fibers and filled with wool, which adds just the right amount of support. The pillow’s shape allows it to be slipped under the arm, taking weight off of the incision. Doctors have credited this design with lowering pain and, thus, lowering the rate of painkiller consumption.
Sleep is the cornerstone of wellbeing.
It refreshes, restructures, and rebuilds our bodies at a microcellular level. If we sleep well, we wake rested and inclined to take that dreamy feeling of wellness throughout the day.
When I tried the mattresses at DDB, I experienced my body falling in line with my natural posture as I lay horizontally. Unlike other synthetic mattresses, these allow your body’s muscles to relax completely. I must admit I almost fell asleep I was so relaxed. John explained that part of this intense relaxation is in thanks to the improvement of the body’s blood circulation attributed to the pull of gravity, allowed to work its magic thanks to the mattress’ ingenious construction.
It is an utterly blissful feeling. . .
