Our founder, Laurence Carr, was at CERSAIE 2023 in Bologna, Italy, as part of the North American delegation organized by Ceramics of Italy x Novita PR — the International Exhibition of Ceramic Tile and Bathroom Furnishings — to discover the most innovative products, cutting-edge materials, original shapes, and the latest technologies for architectural design, presented in preview by some of the most important companies in the sector.
With 625 exhibitors,15 pavilions, and 145,000 square meters of exhibition space, Cersaie is the “can’t miss” annual event dedicated to ceramics and bathroom furnishings.
The Route 40 exhibition, curated by Davide Vercelli and set up by Dario Curatolo, and dedicated to mark the 40th anniversary of Cersaie was a special journey back in time to relive the evolution of bathroom furnishings and ceramics over the last four decades.
This annual trade fair on Italian ceramics combines the creativity of design with the efficiency of technical solutions, and Laurence had a wonderful time exploring the unique Italian artisans and brands that are part of this trendy and fun showcase.
TRENDSPOTTING: Laurence’s notable styles and projected trends for tiles and ceramics in 2024.
Terrazzo tiles are a classic and timeless look, and they’re making a comeback in a big way. These tiles are made from a mixture of marble chips, cement, and other materials and are seen in bathrooms and kitchens in various applications.
Large format tiles are another trend that’s on the rise. These tiles can be up to several feet wide and long or 3m x 3m, and create a seamless and modern look. They can be used in a variety of applications for different effects, such as a faux-marble appearance or a statement wall in the bathroom.
Geometric tiles add a touch of personality and style to any space. Abstract shapes, made of hexagons, circles, and squiggles, and interwoven in multiple patterns to create complex and unique designs. These are perfect for both floors and walls, and add a focal point to a room.
Amplified nature tiles, with prints that feature natural elements like plants, animals, and landscapes in a bold and exaggerated way are popular and made from a variety of different stones, such as marble, granite, and travertine.
Sustainability is becoming increasingly important to consumers, and this is also reflected in the tile industry. More and more manufacturers are offering sustainable tile options, such as tiles made from recycled materials or tiles that are produced along with third-party standard certifications.
All of the above styles are durable and easy to maintain, which is essential for homeowners seeking a long-lasting and low-maintenance tile option. They are also available in a variety of colors and styles, giving homeowners the flexibility to choose the perfect tile for their décor. And they are all affordable, making them a good choice for homeowners on a budget.
What was notably absent? Herringbone and chevron patterns, Penny tiles, and Moroccan tiles have started to be seen as less trendy as they’ve become viewed as more traditional and dated.
THE BEST OF: Laurence’s favorite finds
DECORATORI BASSANESI: Innovation and an unconventional character have always been Decoratori Bassanesi’s distinctive features. The company was established in 1988 by Paolo Serraiotto, aiming to give a contemporary twist to artistic décor. In 2008, Decoratori Bassanesi started exploring ceramic tiles’ potential. Its collaborations with renowned designers have resulted in in-depth research and state-of-the-art collections with a strong identity.
The ŌGI series of Fioranese Ceramica: By combining the industrial appearance of concrete with the grandeur of glazed Majolica, a charming contrast is created, telling stories of craft and history.
With an extraordinary combination of materials and colors, the ŌGI series can be used in infinite interpretations and limitless design possibilities.
The Cera collection by Ceramiche Refin: This collection represents a totally new creative look for the world of ceramic surfaces. It is inspired by the look and feel of melted candle wax and features a velvety smooth surface with subtle veins.
The tiles are available in a variety of neutral colors, including grey, cream, and white, featuring a unique texture and finish. They look and feel incredibly luxurious, perfect for adding a touch of sophistication to any space.
They’d be magnificent in a bathroom, to create a spa-like oasis, or in a living room, to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
The ABKSTONE Cooking Surface Prime by ABK Group: This product is a ceramic induction cooktop that is embedded into a porcelain tile countertop.
The tile is heat-resistant and can withstand temperatures up to 1,100 degrees Celsius (2,012 degrees Fahrenheit). It is an innovative product for a number of reasons: It is a minimalist cooking surface that integrates seamlessly into the countertop, creating a clean and modern look in the kitchen. The cooktop is easy to clean and maintain. The porcelain tile is non-porous and does not absorb stains or spills. Induction cooking is more energy-efficient than traditional cooking methods, such as gas or electric cooking.
And the cooktop is safe to use. The tile surface does not heat up, so there is no risk of burns.
This is a sustainable product made from recycled materials, which is of particular interest to LC inc. The porcelain tile is made from 40% recycled materials, and the induction cooktop is made from 100% recycled materials. Laurence predicts that this product will be a great success in the upcoming NKBA/KBIS 2024 in Las Vegas.
The Tremme Robineteria: The Aurelia family of single-lever taps, designed by Danilo Fedeli in brass in twelve finishes from brushed rose gold to matte white, fit into any style with their rigorous shapes and classic lines.
ON THE RISE: Notable elements we hope to see become more mainstream
→ Self-cleaning tiles have a special coating that repels dirt and grime, making them easy to clean.
→ Air-purifying tiles contain photocatalytic materials that break down pollutants in the air.
→ Antibacterial tiles have a special coating that kills bacteria on contact.
→ Heated tiles provide a comfortable walking surface, even in cold weather, and are a more energy-efficient way to warm a room than forced air.
→ Solar tiles can generate electricity from sunlight, which can then be used to power the home.
→ From delicate pinks, mauves, and mint to intense and reassuring ocean blues, forest greens, and pine, from matte finishes to brilliant enamels, this year, trendy palettes prevailed. Nothing is left to chance, and even the most technical elements such as hinges and handles, wear precious finishes, such as gold, platinum, brass, and copper.
Towards sustainable production, where the tile design goes, Ceramics become a piece of furniture.
Overall, the scene at Cersaie was rich with inspiration, providing great fodder for research and planning as we look toward upcoming projects for Laurence Carr Inc. and Studio Laurence. Laurence Carr was honored to be included in this wonderful Italian event.
