It’s January 10th and the world, it seems, has been swept into a frenzy of tidying up thanks to one of our favorite organization experts, Marie Kondo. With brilliant foresight, Netflix released a limited original series with the tidying expert on January 1st, just in time to fuel the New Year’s resolution fire. Indeed, this series has fanned the flames, turning fire into a firestorm.

Instead of an instructional series, Kondo’s show creates a personal connection to tidying, entering homes of families struggling to keep the mess under control. Confirming what Laurence Carr Designs has long touted as a key element in happy living, Kondo proves that by when you clear the clutter you clear pathways to happiness.

Laurence Carr Designs has long embraced the power of minimalism, reminding clients that busy surfaces lead to a busy mind. This notion has been quietly adopted by men and women of all ages, and took on mainstream popularity with The Minimalists, Joshua Fields Millburn & Ryan Nicodemus, whose books, podcast and television series advocated stripping your home down to the bare minimum. The Minimalists’ rigorous methods even suggest tossing old photos, replacing them with digital copies displayed on a digital photo frame in the home. Beautiful, but by some standards, cold.

Marie Kondo’s theory, however, revolves around love and surrounding oneself with objects that make you feel love. And it seems this breed of minimalism is speaking largely to the millennial generation–a generation who is implementing change at a frenzied pace. Throughout the last ten days, Twitter has been buzzing with Kondo converts expressing excitement and boasting about their progress.

This fervor proves one thing. Humankind is searching for an answer–collectively, we want to live happier, more fulfilled lives. This is a guiding principle of holistic interior design, and sits at the very foundation of design based on personal emotional and spiritual goals.

This recent movement brings me such joy. It is the spark that promises to shed light on the holistic design industry, offering proven methods that provide a stepping stone toward deep, lasting wellbeing. After all, decluttering is the first step toward alignment and this act of cleaning house and clearing out unnecessary stuff shows commitment to bettering ones’ surroundings. This betterment ultimately leads to a happier, more fulfilled life.
