Innovations in tile mean that this building material is no longer relegated to a backsplash, bathroom, or kitchen floor. Tiles are now making their way into our living spaces and are standing out in surprising ways.

What makes tile so fantastic is the melding of textures, shapes, and colors in endless ways, the material can influence the feelings a space evokes. Mixing patterns is no longer frowned upon, nor is it vital to create a homogenous look.

Tile allows us to play with shape and depth like never before. Here are some examples of tiles that work well from kitchen to bathroom and beyond.

Innovations in Natural Materials

Wood elements are forever tied to nature-inspired design, and in the search for alignment, there is no better material to surround yourself with. Companies from Italy to Tennessee are creating tiles that mimic slices of wood and even bark, expertly using ceramic, porcelain and even petrified wood. Perfect for your entryway, sanctuary, or bathroom, these tiles evoke an instant feeling of serenity and well-being.

Named for its resemblance to a water-stained mirror, water glass tile is a favorite in high-end luxury design. This organic tile comes in large slabs and works well in moisture-heavy spaces. Evoking a sense of calm, water glass contains movement within the pattern, enhancing one’s sense of relaxation.

A contemporary update to the classic subway tile, a matte chevron pattern is a chic upgrade to your typical backsplash. This achieves a timeless but elevated look. Try it with a white grout or add visual interest by enhancing the patterned detail with a smokey, grey grout.

In lieu of tile, consider a stone slab. Concrete’s texture and variation makes this natural element both practical and alluring. Contrary to popular belief, when coupled with supple textiles, this material can evoke a safe, cozy feel. Pair with brass fixtures for a sophisticated space. Should you be concerned about the porous nature of concrete, consider an engineered Caesarstone, which achieves the same look without the risk of staining.

Terracotta is understated but chic. Its matte finish is calming and classic. Pair with brass fixtures or a live edge element to make your space feel spa-like, achieving the calming, balanced energy you crave.

Terrazzo

Playful, yet earthy, Terrazzo has rich, ancient elements to it that will never go out of style. Avoid slabs with small terrazzo detailing, which can look dated. Instead, look for slabs that are chunky and graphic. The bigger the details, the more elevated and editorial this look becomes.

If you are looking to make a statement, you want a bold, graphic tile. This tile works well in a playful application, straight lines and hard stops can be avoided, allowing the finish to look almost scattered. Or, you may even choose to use it in one area of a house, like under a bathtub, piano, or large accent piece. Consider graphic tile for an entryway or even a stair vertical, and don’t be afraid to carry your design up the wall.
